ANNOUNCEMENT: NEW IMATU PRESIDENT

We are proud to officially announce that Ms Queen Mbatha will assume the role of President of IMATU, effective 1 August 2025, following the retirement of the erstwhile President, Mr Keith Swanepoel.

This historic moment not only marks Ms Mbatha as the first woman to hold this prestigious position, but it also coincides with the start of Women’s Month in South Africa, a time when we honour the courage, strength, and contributions of women in shaping our nation. Her appointment stands as a powerful symbol of progress, particularly in the context of South Africa’s history and the ongoing pursuit of gender equity.

Ms Mbatha’s journey spans over two decades of committed service within IMATU. Born in Cato Ridge, KwaNyavu, she began her career in the eThekwini Municipality’s Treasury Department in 1994, and a became a shop steward in 2002. Her leadership path has included serving as Vice Chairperson and later Regional Chairperson of the eThekwini Region, where she was instrumental in strengthening internal structures and actively engaging municipal leadership to protect and promote the interests of IMATU members.

Ms Mbatha has long been a member of the National Executive Council, contributing to key portfolio committees such as Human Resources, Labour Relations, and notably serving as Vice President: Finance.

Elected as Deputy President in 2021, she has demonstrated consistent strategic vision, a deep commitment to member wellbeing, and a firm belief in unity and purpose. A passionate advocate for women in leadership, Ms Mbatha encourages women to build confidence and actively take up space in decision-making roles.

As President, she will lead the National Executive Council and our Portfolio Committees, championing a vision centred on growth, accountability, and social transformation through sustainable local government.
